Why Does a Morning Routine Matter for New Moms

As a new mom myself, having a morning routine drastically improves how the rest of my day is going to go.
A few things a morning routine can do for you:
🌼Reduce anxiety and overwhelm
🌼Allow you to feel more in control of your day
🌼Improve mood and energy (yes, even on the scarce amount of sleep you may have gotten!)
So what’s first?
First, you have to give yourself a little grace.
This is not a post about how you need to set your alarm for 6am every morning- get up eat, workout, and journal.
That is not realistic for a new mom.
In this phase of life, sleep is unpredictable and it’s important to get as much of it as you can. So don’t worry too much about the time.
Knowing that sometimes your morning may start at 7am and sometimes it may start at 10am will give you the freedom you need to start your day on the right foot.
It’s not about the time, it’s about the rhythm.
How do you build a routine that’s realistic for a new mom?
Think about what’s important to you and pick 2-3 activities that:
🌸Make you feel good
🌸Take 5-10 minutes each
🌸Can be done with baby nearby
Here’s some ideas of quick morning habits that can help change the trajectory of your day:
(Try to pick one from each category)
Mind
Gratitude Journal
Deep Breathing
Devotional or Podcast

Body
Stretch or Yoga
Walk with Baby
Water & Vitamins
Home
Load the Dishwasher
Start a Load of Laundry
Make the Bed
Does 3 feel like too much? Start with just one!
The idea here is to get up, get your body moving, and your mind calm so that you’re able to continue your day feeling more grounded.
The most important step: Include your baby
Don’t wait till you feel like you have time or baby is down for nap to implement a morning routine.
As a mom, especially one with a newborn, those times are scarce.
So, make it a point to involve your baby in your morning routine!
🌺Do your 5 minute stretch with baby on the play mat
🌺Nursing your baby? Listen to a short podcast or journal if you can
🌺Need to unload your dishwasher, wrap your baby and get it done!
Newborns love to be close- they still feel like they’re apart of you and not a new person of their own.
When my baby was a newborn, this was my favorite wrap. It’s incredibly soft and he almost always immediately fell asleep!
Does using a wrap like this feel intimidating? Check out this easy tutorial here!

Including your baby will remove pressure while still helping you feel like you.
Now that you’ve chosen a routine that works for you..
Write it out & Keep it Visible
Create a visual reminder of your routine and post it somewhere you’ll see it (on your fridge, mirror, or inside a cabinet)
Seeing it written out is a tangible reminder that helps you build a habit. Even on those tired, foggy mornings.

Last: Give Yourself a Little Grace
When building a habit, it’s important to remember that you likely won’t be able to stick to the exact routine perfectly every day. And that’s totally okay.
We’re striving for progress, not perfection.
Some mornings will feel productive, and some will feel like you’re barely keeping it together. Keep showing up anyways.
